How Sajha Works

Community News

Start or join a discussion. React with a tap (like, love, laugh, wow, namaste), reply with a quick phrase, share a photo or a YouTube link, or add a poll to your post. Long threads open on their newest replies; use the page numbers or Previous to go back and read the earlier ones.

Classifieds

Buy, sell, find a room, or find a job. Save a search to get emailed when something new matches, favorite listings you like, and mark your own as sold once it's gone. If your own listing has slipped down the page, you can bring it back to the top for a one-time $2.99. When you post, choose your country, state (or region) and city - your listing then appears in the matching region automatically.

Marketplace

Shop stores run by other members, or open your own for free and list what you make or sell. Everything in the green Free stuff section costs nothing: give away what you no longer need, or pick up what someone else is giving. Sajha never touches the money - you pay a US store by card or PayPal, straight to the seller's own account, and a Nepal store's orders are always cash on delivery. A new store goes live straight away; the Sajha team may suspend one that breaks the rules.

Events

See what's happening nearby, tap "I'm going," and add it to your calendar. A festival badge shows when an event falls during Dashain, Tihar, or another Nepali festival. You can start your own private event and invite friends who can RSVP. Or you can have a paid Event and manage payments. For a paid event, you choose how buyers pay: by card through Stripe (with a small Sajha service fee), straight into your own PayPal account with no Sajha fee, or both.

Service Providers

Find restaurants, shops and service businesses recommended by the community, read or leave a review, and get directions with the map on each listing. Search by business name right from the homepage or the directory.

Requests

Have a problem or need - a leaky faucet, a tax question, moving help? Post it and let local vendors send you quotes.

Archives

Browse old discussions from the original Sajha.com, newest reply first. Type a word from the topic and press Search to find a thread, then use the page numbers to move through the list. Long threads open on their newest replies; use the page numbers or Previous to go back and read the earlier ones.

Community Sites

Nepali associations and organizations get their own page for news, events, officers and documents - all still visible in the regular news and events lists too. Now any Nepali organization can have a free website within sajha. Even a 5 year old can create it!

Each organization chooses how people become members: anyone can join, people apply and the organizers approve them, or by invitation only (by email, or by picking an existing member).

Interest Groups

Start or join a group around a hobby or sport, like volleyball or hiking. Pick your region, add a short description and a banner, and it goes live straight away. Join any public group to see who else is in it. Private groups are listed by name only - people ask to join, or you invite them by email. Each group has its own events calendar (list or month view) where members can RSVP, and organizers can make an event members-only. Each group also has polls that only its members can see and vote in. Tap Get alerts on a group to be told about its new events and polls, with a reminder before each event - on your bell and, if you turned notifications on, your phone. Organizers can start group chats for the members (everyone or chosen people). Chats live in Messages, and each person decides for themselves whether to get notifications. Organizations can invite members by email too and, if they switch Members on, approve join requests - then chat with, poll and alert their members. When posting news or an event, organizers can choose not to show it on the main Sajha home page.

Messaging

Message another member directly, or start a group conversation. You can even invite someone by email who isn't registered yet - they'll be added once they sign up.

Your region and language

Pick your region from the top of any page to see local content first, or choose Global to see everything. Switch the whole site to Nepali any time with the language toggle in the header.

Profiles and privacy

Every name on the site links to that member's profile. Add a photo, a short bio and where you're from, and choose for each detail who sees it: Public, just your Friends, or Only me. Visitors who aren't logged in see nothing but a name.

Friends, following and blocking

Send a friend request - once accepted, friends can see the details you've shared with Friends. Or simply follow someone to be told when they post news, a public event or a classified; following never reveals private details. You choose who can follow you (Anyone, Only friends or Nobody), and you can block a member at any time.

Find people

Search members by name, interest, skill, school or workplace. You decide what can be found: add interests, skills, education and work to your profile, each with its own privacy setting, or switch off the option to be found in People search. People search is for logged-in members.

Your notification bell

The bell at the top of every page collects new messages, posts from people you follow, and alerts such as friend requests, replies to your discussions, saved-search matches and listings about to expire. Tap an item to go straight to it, or mark everything as read.

Your calendar

Your own calendar with a List view and a month Calendar view. Open it from your name (top right) > My Calendar. Type in your own private items - a title, a date, a time (or All day) and, if you like, a reminder - and they show only to you. On any public event, press "Add to my calendar" to put it there too. Reminders arrive in your notification bell, and on your phone if you turned on phone notifications. Tap a day in the month view to add something on that day.

Photo albums

Keep and share your own photo albums. Every member gets 1 free album with up to 50 photos; Album Plus ($10 a month through PayPal) lets you start up to 5 new albums every month, with up to 400 photos in each. Photos are shrunk to 2000 px on your own phone or computer before they upload. An album can be public (listed on the Photo Albums page) or private (only people you send its link to can open it). People who are not logged in see the first 6 photos; they log in to see the rest. Tap any photo to open it across the whole screen, swipe between photos, and use the full screen button. If Album Plus ends, nothing is deleted: your first album stays shared and the others are seen only by you until you renew. Open your albums from your name (top right) > My Photo Albums.

To share a photo on Facebook, open it and tap the Facebook button at the top. Anyone can share the photos they can see. The shared post shows that photo, and the link opens the album on it - even for people who are not logged in.

Each album shows how many times its photos have been viewed. A photo is counted once per visit when it is opened full size; the owner's own views are not counted.

Businesses and organizations can sponsor Sajha - a banner on the homepage and the Sponsors page, Platinum/Gold/Silver, for one or more months (3+ months gets 20% off). Choose a tier, upload your own banner or let us design one - we paint three backgrounds with AI, print your name, tagline and call to action on each, and you pick the one you like - then pay by PayPal. Every past month stays on the Hall of Fame archive, so your sponsorship keeps showing long after it ends. No website? We can build your organization a free page on Sajha. To edit or renew later, open My Sponsorships from your account menu or from the Sponsors page. From Edit you can also change your banner at any time - upload a new picture, or switch to a designed banner. You can also pay monthly with PayPal auto-renew for 20% off - cancel any time in PayPal.

Sajha on your phone

Add Sajha to your phone's Home Screen and it opens like an app. Turn on notifications to get a ping for new messages, replies and friend requests even when the site is closed, and stay logged in. On iPhone, add it to the Home Screen first - notifications only work from there.

Text message alerts (US)

If you have a US mobile number, you can get a text when a vendor sends a quote on your request or event. Vendors can also get a text when a new request matches their services (at most 3 a day). You choose which alerts you want, confirm your number with a code, and can stop any time by replying STOP or turning it off in your settings.

Formatting your posts

Descriptions for classifieds, events, business listings and community site pages have a small toolbar: bold, italic, headings, lists, quotes, links and pictures - so your post looks the way you want.

Polls

Add a poll to your own news post, vote in the Poll of the week on the homepage, and look back at earlier ones any time in Past Polls.
